Lower Hutt landmark returns, work underway

The hotel, known locally simply as The Angus, will operate as Carnmore Hotel Lower Hutt as part of the Carnmore Hotel Collection. The project will see 75 rooms upgraded to four-star standard, alongside refreshed event spaces, a restaurant and two bars.

Built more than 40 years ago by local construction company W.M Angus, the hotel has long been a venue for weddings, business functions and milestone celebrations across the Hutt Valley. In recent years it faced significant challenges, including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and its future had been uncertain.

New owners have partnered with Carnmore Hotel Collection to manage the property and oversee its redevelopment. The Angus will be the fifth hotel to join the Carnmore brand.

Andrew French, director of Carnmore, said the decision to invest in the Lower Hutt landmark was about more than bricks and mortar.

“We knew this was a unique hotel that held a special place in the hearts and minds of Lower Hutt and beyond,” French said. “We are delighted to build on that, with the support of a strong team that has seen the challenges over the years, who are committed to continuing the tradition of excellence, service and care. This completely aligns with our values at Carnmore of providing comfort, care and connections.”

Carnmore relaunched as a customer-facing brand in 2020 after operating as a bespoke hotel management company for several years. The partnership behind the brand brings together three hoteliers with more than 100 years of combined experience in New Zealand and overseas.

The refurbishment is being led by Lower Hutt-based Duncan Commercial Construction, with several original features of the building retained.
